Cambodia blast: 20 soldiers killed in ammunition explosion

Reports from officials confirm that a tragic incident occurred at a military base in Cambodia, resulting in the loss of twenty soldiers due to an ammunition explosion.

Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed profound shock at the explosion, which occurred in the southern Kampong Speu province on Saturday. The cause of the explosion remains unknown at this time.

In response to the devastating event, Prime Minister Manet has directed the government to provide compensation to the families of the deceased soldiers, as well as assistance to the injured.

Taking to Facebook, Prime Minister Manet extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.

Unverified videos circulating on social media captured the sound of multiple explosions during the incident, which took place around 14:45 local time (07:45 GMT). Images also emerged showing significant damage, including a destroyed warehouse, a damaged military truck, and individuals receiving medical attention.

The Cambodian military stated that the incident was the result of a warehouse ammunition explosion, which obliterated a truck loaded with weaponry. The explosion also caused destruction to an office building and nearby barracks, affecting approximately 25 homes in the vicinity, according to reports from AFP.

Prime Minister Manet assured swift action, announcing that authorities will promptly organize and fund funeral ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. Families of the deceased will receive $20,000 (£16,000) in compensation, while injured soldiers will be provided with $5,000 in support.

“I extend my prayers for the souls of the soldiers to find peace, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured soldiers and victims,” Prime Minister Manet remarked.

This tragic incident recalls a similar event in 2005, when five Cambodians lost their lives and three were injured in an explosion at a military arms depot near Battambang.
