Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, has been hospitalized just days following the overturning of his 2020 rape conviction in New York, as confirmed by his lawyer.

Arthur Aidala stated that Weinstein was transferred to a Manhattan hospital on Friday. Despite the overturning of his conviction, Weinstein remains in jail after being separately found guilty of rape in Los Angeles.

Aidala expressed concerns about Weinstein’s health, describing him as “somewhat of a train wreck health-wise.” He emphasized that Weinstein requires significant physical assistance, stating, “It seems like he needs a lot of help, physically. He’s got a lot of problems,” in an interview with AP.

Later, in a statement provided to CBS, the BBC’s US partner, Aidala revealed that Weinstein was hospitalized after the New York City Department of Correction determined he required “immediate medical attention.”

“A myriad of tests are being performed on Harvey, and he is being kept under observation,” Aidala added.

A spokesperson for the corrections department confirmed that Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue Hospital.

On Friday, Harvey Weinstein was transferred from the Mohawk Correctional Facility, where he had been since 2023, to the Rikers Island jail complex.

Weinstein’s legal team has previously disclosed his numerous health issues, including diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart and vision problems. In 2020, he spent five days hospitalized due to ongoing heart problems and chest pains.

Arthur Aidala, Weinstein’s lawyer, mentioned that he is slated to meet with Weinstein on Monday ahead of his court appearance on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier in the week, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s conviction, citing an unfair trial. The court highlighted that prosecutors had called witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him, resulting in an unfair portrayal of his past behavior, thus ordering a new trial.

In his 2020 trial, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting Mimi Haleyi, a former production assistant, in 2006, and raping Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Weinstein’s defense team contended that the sexual encounters between Weinstein and the accusers were consensual. Additionally, Weinstein was sentenced in California last year to 16 years in prison for raping an Italian model and actress in a Beverly Hills hotel in 2013.
